Why Vegan?

What is veganism?

Respecting our fellow animals through veganism means opposing their use altogether.

Veganism goes beyond ‘diet’

Our fellow animals are used in a variety of different ways.

Diet

Our fellow animals bodies being eaten is the primary form of use many might think of. They are also used for their milk, eggs, honey, and less obvious ways such as ‘gelatin.’

‘Fashion / Art’

Our fellow animals skin, hair, feathers, and other parts are often worn or used as ‘art.’ Euphemisms such as ‘leather’ and ‘fur’ are often used.

‘Entertainment’

From ‘zoos’ (animal prisons), ‘aquariums’ (water prisons), and ‘circuses,’ to ‘horse racing,’ ‘hunting,’ ‘fishing’, and ‘rodeos’… our fellow animals are forced to ‘entertain’ in a myriad of different ways.

‘Testing’

Perhaps the least visible form of animal use, so-called ‘testing’ behind the closed doors of laboratories is done for food, medicine, and many other purposes.

Labor

From ‘transportation’ and ‘cargo carriers,’ to ‘police and military dogs,’ our fellow animals are forced to serve humans in many other ways.

‘Companionship’

Our fellow animals are ‘bred,’ (manipulated into having families) only to be separated and then sent to human families. Often this occurs while countless individuals are murdered who cannot find a home.

Before you ask ‘How?’ ask ‘Why?’

Our fellow animals are used in a variety of different ways.

“If the Why is Powerful, the How is Easy.”
-Jim Rohn

Sometimes it can feel like we don’t have enough power as an individual.  However it’s important to remember that the billions of humans are made up of individuals… all with the capacity to change, and make a positive impact on the world. Our fellow animals deserve respect.

If you have met…

…the individuals at Respect or followed along with them on social media, you’ll be keenly aware of how they are each individuals with a life and story of their own. With certain likes, dislikes, and a wide array of emotions – just like you and I. Maybe who you have connected with is a dog, a cat, or other individual who has been close to you in your life.

Now imagine…

…if one of these individuals who you know were on the ‘killing floor’ and about to face their end similar to other species.  Or they were going to be manipulated into having children, and their sons and daughters would face the same fate… would you feel differently?  Should our relationship to someone dictate whether something is morally right or wrong, or is their breeding, use, and murder fundamentally wrong in the first place?

The only morally complete response…

…to the moral atrocities our fellow animals are forced to endure is veganism.  No other half measures fully address what they are forced to endure.  So why not make the decision now to stand up for what is right, and respect our fellow animals through veganism?
